Diary of a Renaissance Man
Excerpt from Book Five of The Evans Poetry Collection, "Diary of a Renaissance Man: Axioms, Aphorisms, Art, and Poetry":
That Night at the Martinique
That night at the Martinique was grand
I had to walk tall like a gentleman
Two smiling faces greeted me at the door
I took a ticket and graced the floor
Chandeliers draped down with an effervescent glow
Familiar folk fancied more than a fashion show
They escorted me to my table up front,
I detoured to the open bar
I awaited the calling of my name: A slowly rising star!
When my name was called, I didn’t miss a beat
I walked with pride, with passion inside, and felt my body heat
I said:
“With veins that run deep in my soul Vessels more precious than pure gold
A being so uniquely defined
Beauty that cannot be denied Full of life
Hope
History
Of goodness Grace Destiny
From a perfect model molded by
Mighty, masterful hands
An awesome creature
No small wonder
I am a man”
Lights were flashing
The crowd started clapping
Then, I decided to offer more
I added:
“Now, you may wonder where my poetry comes from
The answer, I wish was simple
For my poetry is the product of an unplanned conception
A timeless labor of love
That wakes me up in the middle of the night
Kicking, pulling, tugging on my insides
Causing me to leap up out of my bed and race
For a strip of paper, a pencil, or pen
Giving me the strength to leave home
With my single-Mother, two little sisters
In our one-bedroom apartment on the third floor
Where we, sometimes, wondered where our next meal
Was coming from
Forcing me to contemplate the importance, impact,
And hold that it would someday have on my life
With omnipresence, poetry overwhelms me
It fills my mind
An open oasis of ideation, sounds, semantics,
Experiences
That must be shared
Brought to life…”
At that moment, I knew that my fate had been sealed
I had opened up, freed myself
My wounds had been healed
That night at the Martinique was grand
Because I was no longer a man,
But had become a Renaissance Man!
